United Kingdom

The BBC dominates British radio. BBC Radio 1 has played pop for younger listeners since 1967 and is on FM between about 97.1 and 99.8 MHz. BBC Radio 2, on 88.1–90.2 FM, is the UK’s most-listened-to station, with more than 12 million weekly listeners according to RAJAR’s 2026 figures. BBC Radio 6 Music is a digital-only station for alternative music that listeners campaigned to save from closure in 2010. For speech, BBC Radio 4 carries news, drama and comedy. Note that its long wave service ended in June 2026, so it is now on FM, DAB and online only. The BBC World Service covers world news in more than 40 languages.

On the commercial side, Capital FM and Heart are the big pop brands, Absolute Radio and Virgin Radio UK play rock and pop, LBC is the leading talk station, and talkSPORT covers sport. Classic FM is the most popular classical choice. Our BBC radio guide explains every BBC network, and the United Kingdom page lists hundreds more.

Best for: English-language music and speech radio of every kind.

Ireland

RTÉ Radio 1 is Ireland’s main public station, with news, current affairs, documentaries and music. Its roots go back to the country’s first national radio service in 1926. The national commercial stations Today FM, which plays music, and Newstalk, which covers news and talk, are the other big names. More are on the Ireland page.

Best for: Irish news and conversation in English.

France

French public radio is outstanding. France Inter is Radio France’s main generalist station, mixing news, interviews, culture and humour. FIP has been part of Radio France since 1971 and is one of Europe’s most admired music stations: an eclectic, carefully sequenced mix of jazz, world music, rock, electronic, classical and chanson, with very little talk and no adverts. It also streams themed channels such as FIP Jazz and FIP Rock. For classical music and jazz, Radio France’s France Musique (91.7 FM in Paris) broadcasts many live concerts. For hits, NRJ is one of France’s biggest commercial pop brands. Browse more on the France page.

Best for: music discovery (FIP) and serious French-language talk (France Inter).

Germany

German radio is organised by region, so many of the biggest stations serve a single state but stream to everyone:

See the Germany page for hundreds more.

Best for: polished pop radio with strong news and traffic services.

Austria and Switzerland

The Austrian public broadcaster ORF runs two stations worth knowing. Hitradio Ö3 is the country’s most popular station, with chart hits, a big morning show and news. FM4 is its alternative music station, playing indie, electronic and hip-hop, and it presents in both German and English. That makes it one of the easiest continental stations for English speakers to follow.

In Switzerland, SRF 3 is the pop and rock station of the German-language public broadcaster, and Radio Swiss Jazz plays jazz, blues and soul with no adverts. Its sister station, Radio Swiss Classic, does the same for classical music. Swiss public broadcaster SRG has focused on digital radio since 2025, so its stations are on DAB+ and online rather than FM. Find more on the Austria and Switzerland pages.

Best for: alternative music with English presentation (FM4).

Belgium and the Netherlands

Studio Brussel, from Flemish public broadcaster VRT, is one of Europe’s best alternative stations. It plays indie, rock and dance music and gives Belgian artists plenty of airtime.

In the Netherlands, NPO Radio 2 is the public pop and rock station for adults, famous for the Top 2000: a listener-voted countdown broadcast at the end of every year. The two big commercial hit stations are Radio 538, whose name comes from the 538-metre wavelength of the old offshore station Radio Veronica, and Qmusic, which started in Belgium before launching in the Netherlands in 2005. For classical music, try the public station NPO Klassiek (called NPO Radio 4 until 2022). Browse the Belgium and Netherlands pages for more.

Best for: new alternative music (Studio Brussel) and end-of-year nostalgia (the Top 2000).

Scandinavia

Sveriges Radio P3 is Sweden’s public youth station, mixing pop with comedy, documentaries and culture, while Sveriges Radio P4 is the broad, local-flavoured channel for adults. In Norway, NRK P1 is the most-listened-to channel. Norway switched off national FM in 2017, so it is on DAB+ and online. See the Sweden and Norway pages.

Best for: Scandinavian pop and public-service radio.

Italy

Rai Radio 1 is the news and sport channel of public broadcaster RAI, home of the long-running football programme Tutto il calcio minuto per minuto. Radio Deejay built its reputation on pop, dance and personality-led entertainment. RTL 102.5, named after its main FM frequency, is one of Italy’s biggest commercial stations and also broadcasts its studios as a TV channel. More on the Italy page.

Best for: lively presenters and Italian pop.

Spain and Portugal

Cadena SER is one of Spain’s leading news and talk networks, and LOS40 is the country’s leading hit-music station. Both are run by PRISA Radio. For more talk and sport, try Cadena COPE and Onda Cero. In Portugal, Rádio Comercial plays pop and rock and is known for its popular morning show. Browse the Spain and Portugal pages for more.

Best for: Spanish-language talk radio and Latin pop.

Central, Eastern and Southern Europe

Best for: hearing what’s on air across the rest of the continent.
