Rádio Comercial is a national commercial music station in Portugal and, in recent years, the most-listened radio station in the country. It combines a mainstream pop and rock playlist with strong personality-driven entertainment, most notably its celebrated morning show.
History
Rádio Comercial was launched in 1979, in the reorganisation of Portuguese broadcasting that followed the 1974 revolution, initially as a commercial channel within the state broadcasting system. It was privatised in the 1990s and subsequently passed through several ownership groups, spending many years as the flagship music station of the Media Capital group alongside sister stations such as M80 and Cidade FM. In the 2020s the Media Capital radio portfolio, including Rádio Comercial, was acquired by Bauer Media Audio, the European radio division of the Bauer Media Group.
Format and programming
The station programmes a hot adult contemporary mix of international and Portuguese pop and rock, spanning current hits and familiar favourites. Its weekday schedule is anchored by the morning show “As Manhãs da Comercial”, one of the most popular programmes in Portuguese radio, known for its comedy segments, songs and on-air team. Throughout the day, music-led shows are complemented by entertainment features, listener interaction and support for Portuguese artists.
Reach
Rádio Comercial broadcasts nationwide through a network of FM frequencies covering mainland Portugal, and is also available online via live streaming and its mobile apps, which extend its audience to Portuguese-speaking listeners abroad.
Significance
Having overtaken its longtime rival RFM to lead the national audience rankings, Rádio Comercial is the benchmark for commercial music radio in Portugal. Its morning show hosts are among the best-known media personalities in the country, and the station’s playlist exerts a notable influence on Portuguese popular music.
