Rai Radio 1 is the principal radio channel of RAI, Italy’s public service broadcaster. It is the network’s main outlet for news, current affairs, sport and public-interest talk, and it traces its lineage directly back to the very beginning of Italian broadcasting.
History
Regular radio broadcasting in Italy began on 6 October 1924 under the URI (Unione Radiofonica Italiana), the direct ancestor of today’s RAI. After the Second World War the public broadcaster reorganised its radio output into national networks, and the 1975 reform of RAI established the modern channel structure in which Radio 1 became the corporation’s first and most news-oriented network. Over the decades it has served as the reference station for major national events, elections and breaking news in Italy.
Format and programming
Rai Radio 1 is built around hourly news bulletins from RAI’s radio newsroom (GR1), extended morning and drive-time news magazines, political interviews, and discussion programmes covering economics, society and culture. Sport is a signature strength: the long-running programme “Tutto il calcio minuto per minuto”, offering live minute-by-minute football coverage, is one of the most storied titles in Italian radio. Music and entertainment segments round out the schedule, but journalism remains the channel’s core identity.
