History
COPE grew out of the network of “Radio Popular” stations established by the Catholic Church in Spain from the mid-twentieth century, when dioceses and religious institutions operated local broadcasters across the country. These stations were progressively unified under the COPE brand, and the network developed into a full national competitor to Cadena SER during the 1980s and 1990s. Its principal shareholders remain institutions of the Spanish Catholic Church, including the Spanish Episcopal Conference, and the network sits at the centre of a media group that also includes music and sports radio brands.
Format and programming
COPE follows the Spanish generalist model of long magazine programmes anchored by star presenters. Weekday mornings are led by its flagship news and talk show, while afternoons and evenings mix current affairs, interviews and entertainment. Sport is a defining strength: the weekend football marathon “Tiempo de Juego” and the nightly sports programme “El Partidazo de COPE” are among the most popular sports shows on Spanish radio. Religious programming, including Mass and Church-related content, reflects the network’s ownership.
