Onda Cero is one of Spain’s principal generalist radio networks, broadcasting news, talk, sport and entertainment nationwide. Together with Cadena SER and COPE, it is one of the three big national talk brands that dominate Spanish speech radio.

History

Onda Cero was launched in 1990, assembling a national network from existing local frequencies during a period of rapid consolidation in Spanish private radio. Ownership changed several times over the following decades: the network passed through the hands of the ONCE organisation and later Telefónica’s media holdings before being integrated into the radio division of Atresmedia, the media group behind the television channels Antena 3 and laSexta. Under Atresmedia Radio, Onda Cero operates alongside the music networks Europa FM and Melodía FM.

Format and programming

As a “generalist” station in the Spanish tradition, Onda Cero’s schedule is built around long-form magazine programmes. The weekday backbone is the flagship morning show “Más de uno”, followed by talk and entertainment strands such as “Julia en la onda” through the afternoon. Evenings and weekends feature news analysis and extensive sports coverage, including live football commentary and late-night sports debate. Local windows across the network provide regional news and information.

Reach

Onda Cero broadcasts across Spain through a nationwide network of FM frequencies operated by owned-and-operated and affiliated local stations. Its programming is also available online via live streaming, on-demand audio and podcasts through its website and mobile apps.

Significance

Onda Cero is consistently among the most-listened radio stations in Spain, and its flagship presenters are prominent voices in Spanish public debate. As the radio arm of one of the country’s two largest commercial media groups, it plays an important role in Spain’s news ecosystem and in the competitive landscape of national talk radio.
