Radio 538 is a Dutch commercial radio station and one of the most popular music stations in the Netherlands. Based in Hilversum, the traditional centre of Dutch broadcasting, it plays contemporary hit music and dance for a broad national audience and has been a leading force in the Dutch commercial radio market since the early 1990s.
History
Radio 538 was founded in December 1992 by Lex Harding, a former DJ and programme director of the offshore station Radio Veronica. The station’s name refers to the 538-metre wavelength on which Radio Veronica famously broadcast from the North Sea, deliberately linking the new venture to the heritage of Dutch pirate radio. Starting as a cable and satellite service, Radio 538 obtained national FM distribution in the 1990s and grew rapidly into one of the country’s top-rated stations. It later became part of the Talpa media group founded by John de Mol, which consolidated several major Dutch commercial stations under one roof.
Format and programming
The station programmes a contemporary hit radio format focused on current chart music, pop and dance, complemented by high-profile personality shows in the morning and afternoon. Dance music has long been an important part of its identity, with DJ mix shows and support for the Dutch electronic music scene. Radio 538 is also known for large listener events, including its annual open-air celebration on King’s Day, which draws tens of thousands of attendees.
Reach
Radio 538 broadcasts nationally on FM in the Netherlands, on DAB+ digital radio and via online streams and its app, alongside a set of themed digital sub-channels. It consistently ranks among the Dutch stations with the largest market share.
Significance
By tying modern commercial radio to the legacy of Radio Veronica, Radio 538 helped define the post-monopoly Dutch radio landscape. Its scale, event culture and championing of dance music have made it one of the most influential commercial broadcasters in the Netherlands.
