Qmusic is a Dutch commercial radio station broadcasting contemporary hit music nationwide. Launched in 2005 as the Dutch counterpart of the highly successful Belgian station Qmusic, it is owned by the media group DPG Media and has grown into one of the most listened-to radio stations in the Netherlands.

History

Qmusic began broadcasting in the Netherlands in 2005, after its parent company acquired a national FM licence and imported the format of Qmusic Belgium, which had launched in Flanders in 2001 and quickly become a market leader there. The Dutch station spent its early years building an audience in a crowded commercial market dominated by established names such as Radio 538 and Sky Radio. Over the following decade, sustained investment in on-air talent and a strong morning show strategy paid off, and Qmusic rose to the top tier of the Dutch ratings, at times claiming the position of the country’s most listened-to station.

Format and programming

The station follows a contemporary hit radio format, playing current chart hits and recent pop favourites aimed at a young adult audience. Its schedule is anchored by a high-profile breakfast show and personality-led daytime programming, with heavy emphasis on listener interaction, games and large promotional campaigns. Qmusic also stages live events and produces visual radio, streaming its studio output with cameras so shows can be watched online and via its app.

Reach

Qmusic broadcasts across the Netherlands on FM and DAB+ digital radio, and streams online through its website and mobile app alongside several themed digital channels. It consistently ranks among the largest Dutch stations by market share.

Significance

Qmusic demonstrated that a radio brand could be successfully transplanted between the Belgian and Dutch markets, and its rise reshaped the competitive balance of Dutch commercial radio. Together with its Flemish sister station it forms one of the strongest radio brands in the Benelux region.
