Hitradio Ö3 is the nationwide pop music channel of the Austrian public broadcaster ORF. Broadcasting from Vienna, it combines current chart hits with news, traffic services and entertainment, and has for decades been the most listened-to radio station in Austria.
History
Ö3 went on air on 1 October 1967 as part of a major reform of ORF radio that created three distinct national channels. Conceived from the start as a modern music and entertainment service, it introduced formats inspired by international pop radio to Austrian audiences and quickly became a cultural fixture. In the 1990s the station was repositioned as “Hitradio Ö3” with a tighter, chart-oriented format to meet growing competition from newly licensed private broadcasters. Its long-running chart show and event programming have made it central to pop music promotion in Austria.
Format and programming
The station follows a contemporary hit radio and hot adult contemporary format built on current international and German-language chart hits together with recent favourites. Its schedule features a prominent morning show, the Austrian singles chart, comedy segments and extensive listener interaction. News bulletins from the ORF newsroom, nationwide traffic reports through the Ö3 traffic service, and weather updates run throughout the day. Charity initiatives, most notably the annual Christmas fundraising campaign “Ö3 Wundertüte”, are a distinctive part of the station’s identity.
Reach
Hitradio Ö3 is broadcast on FM across the whole of Austria and is also available on DAB+ in parts of the country, via satellite and through ORF’s online streams and apps. It reaches a substantial share of the Austrian population daily and regularly tops national audience surveys by a wide margin.
Significance
As Austria’s dominant music station for more than half a century, Ö3 has shaped the country’s pop radio landscape, launched numerous broadcasting careers and served as the primary national platform for chart music. It remains the commercial and popular flagship of ORF radio.
