FM4 is the alternative music station of the Austrian public broadcaster ORF. Based in Vienna, it focuses on indie, electronic and alternative music and is notable for its bilingual presentation, with programming in both German and English. The station serves a young, urban audience and plays an important role in promoting Austrian and international alternative artists.

History

FM4 launched on 16 January 1995, created as a youth culture channel within ORF’s radio portfolio. It initially shared its frequency with the English-language service Blue Danube Radio, an arrangement that shaped its distinctive bilingual character; since 2000 FM4 has broadcast around the clock in its own right, retaining English-language news and significant English-language presentation. From the beginning the station positioned itself as an alternative to mainstream hit radio, championing music outside the charts and covering youth and pop culture, film, gaming and social issues.

Format and programming

The station’s playlist centres on alternative rock, indie, electronic music, hip-hop and new Austrian music, with specialist evening shows dedicated to genres from house and techno to punk and experimental sounds. News is presented in English during the day and in German in the evening, and some segments also feature French. FM4 curates stages at major Austrian festivals, hosts live sessions, and runs the FM4 Award as part of the Amadeus Austrian Music Awards, supporting domestic acts.

Reach

FM4 broadcasts nationwide on FM across Austria and is available on DAB+ in parts of the country, as well as online through ORF’s streaming platforms and the FM4 app and website, which carries extensive editorial content in German and English.

Significance

FM4 occupies a role in Austria comparable to alternative public channels elsewhere in Europe, acting as the country’s principal broadcast platform for music beyond the mainstream. Its bilingual identity and its consistent support for emerging Austrian artists have made it a distinctive and influential voice in European public radio.
