Capital FM is a national contemporary hit radio network in the United Kingdom, owned and operated by Global. Built around current chart hits, pop and dance music, it targets a young audience and is one of the country’s most prominent commercial radio brands.
History
Capital Radio launched in London on 16 October 1973 as one of Britain’s first legal commercial radio stations, initially offering general entertainment before establishing itself as the capital’s leading music station. Over the following decades the company acquired stations around the UK, and after mergers that ultimately created Global, the brand was relaunched in January 2011 as a national network, combining the London station with rebranded regional outlets under the Capital name. Sister services, including Capital XTRA and Capital Dance, have since extended the brand on digital platforms.
Format and programming
Capital plays a tight rotation of current hits spanning pop, dance and R&B, presented by high-profile hosts. Networked programming from London is combined with local news, travel and advertising in the regions. The station is well known for its large live events, the Summertime Ball and the Jingle Bell Ball, which fill major London venues with international pop line-ups each year.
Reach
Capital broadcasts on 95.8 FM in London and on FM frequencies across many UK regions, as well as nationally on DAB digital radio and online through Global Player. Together the network reaches millions of listeners each week, placing it among the largest commercial music networks in the country.
Significance
Capital’s original London station helped establish commercial radio in Britain, and its transformation into a national brand exemplified the consolidation of UK commercial radio in the 2000s. Today it is a key promotional platform for pop music in the UK, and its branded events are fixtures of the British pop calendar.
