Horizont is the flagship channel of Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), the country’s public service radio broadcaster. Broadcasting around the clock, it is Bulgaria’s principal radio outlet for news, current affairs and sport, complemented by music and cultural programming.
History
Bulgarian National Radio traces its history to 1935, when regular state radio broadcasting was established in Sofia, building on earlier amateur efforts under the name Radio Sofia. As the broadcaster’s output expanded in the post-war decades, its programming was organised into distinct national channels, with Horizont emerging as the main information-led programme, alongside the culture- and education-oriented channel Hristo Botev. After 1989, BNR was transformed from a state organ into a public service broadcaster, and Horizont developed into a modern news network known for its journalistic standards.
Format and programming
Horizont’s schedule is anchored by news bulletins every hour and by extended morning, midday and evening news magazines featuring reporting, interviews and analysis of Bulgarian politics, the economy and international affairs. The channel provides extensive live sports coverage, notably of football and of Bulgarian athletes at major competitions, and its overnight and weekend programming includes music and entertainment strands. Correspondents across Bulgaria and abroad feed a newsroom regarded as one of the country’s most authoritative.
Reach
Horizont is broadcast nationwide on an FM transmitter network reaching the vast majority of Bulgaria’s population, and it streams live on BNR’s website and apps, where its news output is also available on demand. It is among the most-listened radio programmes in the country.
Significance
As the main channel of Bulgaria’s public broadcaster, Horizont plays a central role in the national media system, serving as a trusted source during elections, crises and major events. Its combination of reach and credibility makes it a cornerstone of public service broadcasting in Bulgaria.
