Studio Brussel, often shortened to StuBru, is the alternative music station of VRT, the public broadcaster of Belgium’s Flemish community. Broadcasting from Brussels, it focuses on rock, indie, dance and new music for a young audience and is one of the most influential tastemakers in the Belgian music scene.
History
Studio Brussel began broadcasting on 1 April 1983, initially as a small regional service for the Brussels area within the Flemish public broadcasting system. During the late 1980s and 1990s it evolved into a full-fledged national youth and alternative music channel for Flanders, building a reputation for adventurous programming and close ties to the live music circuit. The station became widely known beyond radio through its annual charity campaign Music for Life, launched in 2006, in which presenters broadcast around the clock in the run-up to Christmas to raise money for good causes.
Format and programming
The station programmes a broad alternative mix spanning indie and alternative rock, electronic and dance music, hip-hop and homegrown Belgian acts, with specialist evening shows digging deeper into individual genres. Support for new and local music is central to its mission: Studio Brussel has helped launch numerous Belgian artists and maintains a strong presence at the country’s major festivals, including extensive coverage of Rock Werchter and Pukkelpop. News bulletins from the VRT newsroom punctuate its music-driven schedule.
Reach
Studio Brussel is available on FM throughout Flanders and Brussels, on DAB+ digital radio, and online via VRT’s streaming platform and its own app, where it also offers themed digital streams.
Significance
For four decades Studio Brussel has been the principal broadcast champion of alternative music in Flanders, shaping festival culture and giving Belgian rock and electronic acts a national platform. Its blend of credible music programming and large-scale charity events has made it one of the most distinctive public radio brands in the Benelux.
