SWR3 is the pop music service of Südwestrundfunk (SWR), the public broadcaster for the German states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. Produced in Baden-Baden, it combines contemporary pop music with news, comedy and entertainment, and ranks among the radio stations with the largest audiences in Germany.

History

SWR3 began broadcasting in 1998, when the public broadcasters Südwestfunk (SWF) and Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) merged to form Südwestrundfunk. The new channel continued the tradition of its predecessor SWF3, which had been on air since the 1970s and was widely regarded as one of Germany’s most innovative pop stations, known for its music journalism and comedy formats. SWR3 inherited much of that identity, including its emphasis on humour and on-air personality.

Format and programming

The station plays a mainstream mix of current international and German pop hits together with familiar titles from recent decades. Regular news bulletins, traffic information and weather reports are woven into a schedule anchored by prominent morning and afternoon shows. Comedy is a defining element of the SWR3 brand, with recurring sketch characters and satirical segments that have become well known across Germany. The station also runs the SWR3 New Pop Festival in Baden-Baden, an annual event showcasing emerging international pop artists.

Reach

SWR3 broadcasts on FM throughout Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, two of Germany’s most populous states, and its signal is also receivable in adjacent regions. It is carried nationally on DAB+ in parts of the country and streams online via its website and app. Audience surveys regularly place SWR3 among the top radio programmes in Germany by daily reach.

Significance

Through its SWF3 heritage and its continuing scale, SWR3 has shaped the sound of German public pop radio for decades. Its combination of hit music, comedy and event programming such as the New Pop Festival has made it a reference point for adult contemporary radio in the German-speaking world.
