Bayern 3 is the pop music radio station of Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), the public broadcaster for the German state of Bavaria. Broadcasting from Munich, it targets a broad adult audience with current hits, entertainment shows and comprehensive traffic and news services, and is one of the most listened-to radio programmes in Bavaria.
History
Bayern 3 went on air on 1 April 1971 as Bayerischer Rundfunk’s third radio programme. It was initially conceived with a strong service character, placing particular emphasis on traffic information for motorists at a time when car radio listening was expanding rapidly. Over the years it developed into a full pop music channel and became the market leader in Bavaria for decades. Since the late 1980s it has faced strong competition from the commercial station Antenne Bayern, a rivalry that continues to define the Bavarian radio market.
Format and programming
The station’s playlist mixes current international and German chart hits with popular songs from recent decades, aimed primarily at listeners in their thirties and forties. The schedule is structured around personality-driven morning and afternoon shows featuring comedy, listener interaction and celebrity interviews, supported by regular news bulletins from BR’s newsroom and frequent traffic updates covering Bavaria’s road network. Bayern 3 also promotes live music through concerts and station events.
Reach
Bayern 3 is available on FM throughout Bavaria, Germany’s largest federal state, as well as on DAB+ digital radio, via satellite and through online streams and the BR apps. It reaches millions of listeners each day and consistently ranks among the leading stations in Bavarian audience surveys.
Significance
As one of the oldest pop service channels of Germany’s public ARD broadcasters, Bayern 3 helped establish the model of the modern German public pop station: hit music combined with strong news, service and traffic content. It remains a central pillar of Bayerischer Rundfunk’s radio portfolio.
