Public radio: NPR and its flagship stations
Public radio is non-commercial: long-form journalism instead of constant ad breaks. For more, see our guide to the best public radio stations in the US.
NPR (National Public Radio)
National Public Radio is not a single station. Founded in 1970, it is a non-profit network that produces national programmes and supplies them to more than 1,000 independently run member stations. Its afternoon newsmagazine All Things Considered first aired on 3 May 1971, and Morning Edition followed on 5 November 1979. Both are still the backbone of public radio schedules today.
In July 2025 Congress cancelled federal funding for public broadcasting, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which passed that money to stations, voted to dissolve in January 2026. NPR’s shows remain on the air nationwide.
Best for: calm, in-depth news with context. To hear NPR live, open its station guide or pick any member station below.
WNYC (New York)
WNYC is New York’s flagship public radio station, run by New York Public Radio. It broadcasts on 93.9 FM and 820 AM, which sometimes carry different programmes. Locally it is known for The Brian Lehrer Show, a weekday talk show on local and national issues, while its national productions include On the Media and Radiolab.
Best for: smart talk radio about New York and the world.
KQED (San Francisco)
KQED serves the Bay Area on 88.5 FM, mixing NPR newsmagazines with its own reporting on California. Its signature local show is Forum, a live weekday call-in programme from 9 to 11 a.m. Pacific time, with one hour on Bay Area topics and one on statewide issues.
Best for: West Coast news and California politics.
WBEZ (Chicago)
Chicago’s WBEZ, on 91.5 FM, is the station where This American Life began. Ira Glass’s show first aired on WBEZ on 17 November 1995 under the name Your Radio Playhouse before going national. Today WBEZ pairs NPR programming with a large local newsroom run by Chicago Public Media.
Best for: Midwest news and narrative storytelling.
Music discovery: KEXP, KCRW and Radio Paradise
These stations pick music by hand, not by algorithm.
KEXP (Seattle)
KEXP broadcasts on 90.3 FM in Seattle and is famous worldwide for letting its DJs choose their own music, from indie rock and hip hop to electronic and global sounds. Its Live on KEXP in-studio sessions, filmed at the station’s Seattle Center home and posted on YouTube, have made it a global music brand.
Best for: discovering new indie and alternative artists. Stream it live on its station guide.
KCRW (Santa Monica)
KCRW is licensed to Santa Monica College and broadcasts on 89.9 FM across Los Angeles. It carries NPR news, but its reputation rests on music, above all Morning Becomes Eclectic, its flagship weekday show, which mixes new releases across genres with live sessions.
Best for: eclectic music fans who also want quality news.
Radio Paradise (online)
Radio Paradise is internet-only. Bill and Rebecca Goldsmith launched it in February 2000 from their home in Paradise, California, which gave the station its name. It later moved and is now based in Eureka, California. It is ad-free and listener-supported, and every playlist is sequenced by hand. You can choose between the Main, Mellow, Rock and Global mixes, all of which are available in lossless FLAC through its own website and apps.
Best for: long, ad-free listening sessions. It’s also a good pick for focus music.
New York’s big three: Z100, Hot 97 and WQXR
Z100
Z100 (WHTZ, 100.3 FM) is iHeartMedia’s Top 40 station in New York. It is home to Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, which Premiere Networks syndicates to more than 80 markets and bills as the most-listened-to Top 40 morning show in the US. Z100 also started the Jingle Ball concert in 1996. The event has been held at Madison Square Garden every year since and has grown into the national iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Tour.
Best for: current chart hits and pop.
Hot 97
Hot 97 (WQHT, 97.1 FM) is New York’s best-known hip hop station. Longtime DJ Funkmaster Flex is still a fixture, and its Summer Jam concert is one of hip hop’s biggest annual nights. The 2026 edition was held at Prudential Center in Newark on 24 July.
Best for: hip hop, R&B and rap culture.
WQXR
WQXR is New York’s classical station. The New York Times sold it in 2009, and New York Public Radio bought the WQXR name and the 105.9 FM licence. The station moved from 96.3 FM to 105.9 FM on 8 October 2009 and became listener-supported. It plays classical music around the clock. For more stations like it, see our best classical radio stations.
Best for: classical music, from symphonies to opera.
Three more legendary American stations
These three don’t have a station guide yet, but you’ll find them on our United States page.
WWOZ 90.7 FM (New Orleans)
WWOZ went on the air in December 1980, started by brothers Walter and Jerry Brock. Its first broadcasts came from a room above the famous Tipitina’s music club. Today it is listener-supported, run largely by volunteer DJs and owned by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. Its mission is to keep the music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana alive.
Best for: jazz and New Orleans music. Also try our jazz radio guide and jazz mood collection.
WFMU 91.1 FM (Jersey City)
WFMU first broadcast in April 1958 from Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey. When the college closed in 1995, staff and supporters bought the licence, and in 1998 the station moved into Jersey City studios paid for by listener donations. It is the longest-running freeform station in the US: each DJ plays whatever they like. Rolling Stone named it the best radio station in the country four years running, from 1991 to 1994.
Best for: adventurous listeners who want genuine surprises.
WSM 650 AM (Nashville)
WSM signed on in Nashville on 5 October 1925, and its call letters come from its original owner’s motto, “We Shield Millions”. On 28 November 1925 it launched the WSM Barn Dance, the show that became the Grand Ole Opry. WSM is still the Opry’s radio home and plays country, bluegrass and Americana. The station turned 100 in October 2025.
Best for: country music and live Opry broadcasts.
