WQXR is New York City’s dedicated classical music station, broadcasting on 105.9 FM. Now a noncommercial service of New York Public Radio, it is among the oldest and most storied classical stations in the United States.

History

WQXR traces its origins to 1936 and spent much of the twentieth century as a commercial classical station owned by The New York Times, becoming a fixture of the city’s cultural life. In 2009 the Times sold the station to WNYC’s parent organization, New York Public Radio, and WQXR moved to 105.9 FM as a listener-supported, noncommercial outlet. The transition preserved full-time classical radio in New York at a time when many American cities were losing their classical stations.

Format and programming

The station broadcasts classical music around the clock, spanning orchestral repertoire, chamber music, opera and choral works, presented by a team of knowledgeable hosts. WQXR features live and recorded performances from New York institutions, carries opera broadcasts, and produces digital content including web streams devoted to specific corners of the repertoire. Its programming balances canonical works with contemporary composers and emerging performers.

Reach

WQXR serves the New York metropolitan area on FM and reaches a global audience through online streaming and its website, which functions as a broader hub for classical music news, video and curated listening.

Significance

As the classical voice of the largest media market in the United States, WQXR plays an outsized role in sustaining classical music broadcasting. Its long association with New York’s concert halls and opera houses, and its survival through a transition from commercial to public ownership, have made it a reference point for how classical radio can endure in the digital era.
