Radio Paradise is an independent, internet-only radio station founded in Paradise, California. Entirely listener-supported and free of advertising, it became one of the earliest and most durable examples of a successful standalone internet radio operation.
History
Radio Paradise was launched in 2000 by Bill Goldsmith, a veteran broadcast programmer, together with his wife Rebecca. Rather than replicating terrestrial radio online, the Goldsmiths built the station around carefully sequenced, human-curated playlists and a direct financial relationship with listeners. The station has remained independent for its entire existence, funded by voluntary listener contributions rather than advertising or subscriptions, and over time expanded from a single stream into multiple curated channels.
Format and programming
The station’s core Main Mix blends rock, singer-songwriter material, electronica, world music, jazz and classical elements into continuous, DJ-crafted segues, an approach often described as eclectic or adult album alternative. Additional streams include mixes focused on mellower material, rock and other themed selections. Playlists are assembled by human curators rather than algorithms, and listener ratings and comments on individual tracks are a distinctive part of the station’s community.
Reach
As an internet-only broadcaster, Radio Paradise has no terrestrial frequency and is available worldwide through its website, mobile apps and integrations with connected speakers and streaming devices. It offers high-quality audio streams, including lossless options, which have contributed to its popularity among audiophiles.
Significance
Radio Paradise demonstrated early on that an independent online station could sustain itself purely through listener support, prefiguring later crowdfunded media models. Its emphasis on human curation, sound quality and community interaction has earned it a devoted international audience and frequent recognition as a benchmark for internet radio done well.
