Hot 97, the on-air brand of WQHT, is a commercial radio station serving the New York City metropolitan area on 97.1 FM. It is one of the best-known hip hop stations in the United States, with a history closely intertwined with the rise of hip hop as a dominant force in popular music.
History
WQHT adopted the Hot 97 branding in the late 1980s, initially with a dance and rhythmic pop format, before moving decisively to hip hop and R&B in the early 1990s. Under longtime owner Emmis Communications the station became a defining voice of New York hip hop culture, launching or elevating the careers of prominent DJs and personalities, including Funkmaster Flex. Emmis sold WQHT and sister station WBLS to MediaCo Holding in 2019.
Format and programming
Hot 97 programs current hip hop and R&B alongside classic tracks, mixshows and high-profile personality-driven dayparts. Its interview segments have produced many widely discussed moments in hip hop media, and the station’s annual Summer Jam concert, running since the 1990s, is one of the most prominent recurring hip hop events in the United States.
Reach
The station broadcasts across the New York metropolitan area, one of the largest radio markets in the world, and streams online, extending its audience well beyond the region through its website, apps and digital video content.
Significance
Hot 97 occupies a singular place in hip hop history. As the leading hip hop station in the genre’s birthplace, it has served as a gatekeeper and amplifier for artists from the 1990s onward, and its slogan, “Where Hip Hop Lives,” reflects a cultural role that extends far beyond conventional music radio.
