History
WNYC first went on the air in 1924 as a municipally owned station operated by the City of New York. For decades it served as a civic broadcaster before transitioning to independent non-profit ownership in the late 1990s, when it was acquired from the city by a non-profit foundation that became New York Public Radio.
The station has long balanced local public-affairs coverage with a role as a national programming producer.
Format and programming
WNYC operates on both AM and FM in the New York market, traditionally using the two signals for complementary schedules of news, talk and cultural programming. It carries NPR newsmagazines alongside locally produced shows and is the home of nationally syndicated programs such as Radiolab and On the Media.
Reach
WNYC serves the New York metropolitan area on 93.9 FM and 820 AM and streams online worldwide. As part of New York Public Radio, it also operates sister outlets and a large on-demand catalogue.
Significance
As the public radio voice of the largest media market in the United States, WNYC is one of the most influential public stations in the country and a significant originator of programs heard nationwide.
