smoothfm is a commercial radio brand in Australia specialising in relaxed, easy listening music. Operated by Nova Entertainment, it broadcasts on FM in Sydney and Melbourne and extends to other markets through digital radio and online streaming.
History
smoothfm launched in 2012, when Nova Entertainment (then DMG Radio Australia) relaunched its existing FM stations on 95.3 in Sydney and 91.5 in Melbourne under the new brand. The format was a deliberate bet on an underserved audience seeking calmer music radio, positioned against the louder presentation of contemporary hit stations. The gamble succeeded: smoothfm became a consistent ratings performer in both cities and the brand was subsequently extended to additional markets via DAB+ digital stations and streaming.
Format and programming
The network plays a broad easy listening and adult contemporary mix, spanning soul, soft pop, classic hits and contemporary ballads, delivered with minimal interruption and an emphasis on mood. Presentation is deliberately understated, and the schedule features well-known Australian personalities alongside music-intensive dayparts. Specialty digital streams under the smooth brand focus on themes such as relaxation and particular genres.
Reach
smoothfm broadcasts on 95.3 FM in Sydney and 91.5 FM in Melbourne, with the brand available in other Australian cities on DAB+ digital radio and nationally through online streaming and mobile apps.
Significance
smoothfm is one of the most successful format launches in recent Australian commercial radio, proving that an easy listening proposition could win major-market ratings in the 2010s. Its performance reshaped competition in Sydney and Melbourne and gave Nova Entertainment a strong second national brand alongside its Nova network.
