Nova 96.9 is a commercial FM radio station serving Sydney, Australia. It was the founding station of the Nova brand, which grew into one of the country’s major metropolitan radio networks under Nova Entertainment.
History
Nova 96.9 launched in April 2001 after DMG Radio Australia won a new Sydney commercial FM licence. The station arrived with a fresh presentation style and an initial promise of fewer interruptions than incumbent competitors, quickly establishing itself among younger Sydney listeners. Its success led to Nova stations in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. DMG Radio was later renamed Nova Entertainment, which came under the ownership of Lachlan Murdoch’s investment interests.
Format and programming
The station plays contemporary hit music aimed broadly at listeners in their twenties and thirties, mixing current pop chart material with recent hits. Personality-led breakfast and drive shows are central to its schedule, and high-profile presenters have been a hallmark of the brand, including nationally networked drive programming across the Nova stations. The station also produces podcasts, live music sessions and digital video content around its on-air shows.
Reach
Nova 96.9 broadcasts across the Sydney metropolitan area on 96.9 FM and on DAB+ digital radio, and streams online through the Nova network’s website and apps, which also carry additional digital-only music stations.
Significance
As the first new commercial FM entrant in Sydney in years when it launched, Nova 96.9 reshaped the city’s radio market and demonstrated the viability of a new national youth-skewing network. It remains one of Sydney’s leading FM stations and the flagship of the Nova brand.
