History
RNZ National descends from New Zealand’s earliest state broadcasting services, which developed through the twentieth century under successive public broadcasting organisations. The network was long known as National Radio before adopting the Radio New Zealand National name, and later the shortened RNZ branding as the organisation repositioned itself as a multiplatform public media outlet. Throughout these changes it has remained the country’s principal spoken-word radio service, with its operations centred in Wellington and a significant presence in Auckland.
Format and programming
The network’s schedule is dominated by news and current affairs, including the influential breakfast programme Morning Report and the late-afternoon Checkpoint. Between the news blocks it carries interview-driven magazine shows, science and rural affairs coverage, documentaries, drama and music features. Programming reflects RNZ’s charter obligations, including coverage of Māori issues and use of te reo Māori alongside English. Much of the network’s output is distributed as podcasts and on-demand audio.
