ICI Radio-Canada Première is the flagship French-language talk radio network of CBC/Radio-Canada, Canada’s national public broadcaster. Commercial-free and focused on news, current affairs and culture, it is the francophone counterpart to the English-language CBC Radio One.

History

The network’s origins date to 1936, when the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation was created and began French-language radio service, with Montreal as its production centre. For decades the service was known simply as Radio-Canada’s première chaîne (first network). It was rebranded under the corporation’s “ICI” naming scheme in 2013, becoming ICI Radio-Canada Première. Throughout its history it has been the principal radio voice of French-speaking Canada, chronicling Quebec’s social and political evolution as well as francophone life across the country.

Format and programming

Première carries a talk-based schedule of news, interviews, documentaries, cultural magazines and public-affairs programming, with regional morning and afternoon shows produced in stations across Canada. Its programming covers politics, science, books, music and society, and much of its output is also distributed as podcasts. The network does not carry advertising, in keeping with Radio-Canada’s public radio mandate.

Reach

The network broadcasts on AM and FM transmitters throughout Canada, including 95.1 FM in Montreal, with regional stations serving Quebec and francophone communities in every province. It streams nationally and internationally through Radio-Canada’s OHdio audio platform.

Significance

ICI Radio-Canada Première is the most important radio institution in French-speaking Canada. As the talk network of the public broadcaster, it plays a central role in francophone journalism, cultural debate and the maintenance of French-language media outside Quebec, making it a pillar of Canada’s official bilingualism in broadcasting.
